Fast & Furious 6 is infectious amounts of unpolluted fun. I
can say this for almost every single film in this franchise. They don’t
have amazing stories or characters that would make any difference to
the pantheon of cinema but when you’re holding on to your seat watching a
thoroughly entertaining car chase after another, you don’t care about
the rest. Escapism doesn’t necessarily need to touch greatness.
I was having a conversation with a friend recently about the Fast and Furious movies trying to recollect the chronology of how Han’s character fits into this whole thing. After 10 minutes, we were both confused about the plots of all the films. Apart from the obvious distinctions, the stories seemed the similar and we had no idea about the chronology. All we remembered were the action sequences. I think even the films don’t care about the chronology as much as the action (We googled it later, of course). All I cared about when I entered the theater to watch this film was entertainment. Make no mistake, this film offers balls-out entertainment. Logic is thrown out of the window (the sixth time) and you aren’t bored for a second.
I was happy to see a nice little recap during the opening credits, which shows the significant events from the previous films. I was buckled up to enjoy this film and boy did I enjoy it! For starters, it brings the whole shebang from the previous films. (Except Lucas Black who I’m sure will make an appearance in the next film). Vin Diesel and Paul Walker are in attendance, so are Jordana Brewster, Ludacris, Tyrese Gibson, Sung Kang, Gal Gadot including the latest addition: Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. A character played by Michelle Rodriguez, who died in the 4th film, also returns! Another character from that film returns (Braga, John Ortiz). The new members are Luke Evans and Gina Carano. Carano kicked serious ass in Soderbergh’s Haywire (2011) and does not disappoint here either.
Justin Lin knows how to get these films right. This movie not only sticks to the formula but also shoves in each ingredient required for a worldwide blockbuster. It is larger than the fifth one. Numerous international locations, car chases, comic relief, big action sequences, a romantic sub-plot, bromantic machoness, two catfights and more big action sequences. You will find everything here. While all this ‘let’s have a plot’ and ‘let’s make a blockbuster’ thing is going on, there is also a race. Oh, there’s also memory loss and a twist at the end, in case you were wondering it couldn’t get more filmy.
The reason I like these movies is the idea of working as a team. There's also Dom’s fascination with calling his team a family and whenever they insert a dinner scene where they say grace, it is almost cute. “You don’t turn your back on family even when they do” says Dom (Vin Diesel) in this one. Ludacris and Tyrese make the comedy work. I laughed out loud when Ludacris is asked for a plan B, to which he replies “Plan B? We’re need a plan C, D, E!” I dare you not to laugh even when I’ve already given away the punch line.
My favorite action sequence is the one where Dom saves Letty (Rodriguez). I wouldn’t disclose how… well, because, I can’t. I couldn’t help but let out a “woah” and then applaud. Something these movies have always made sure I do, the first time I see them. The film ends with a 15-minute action set piece involving cars and an airplane. This reminded me of Die Hard 2: Die Harder (1990). Except this runway is the longest runway ever with the longest take-off ever and defies every cinematic logic possible.
I’m not in love with the Fast & Furious movies but I’m definitely in like with them. When Hollywood churns out superhero movies, sci-fi movies, Bond movies or bad action movies, what gets lost in the mix are good guy movies. They don’t need to have the strongest plot but they should offer perfectly good fun. The kind you can watch with your friends while drinking beer and talk in between and not miss a thing. There’s certain entertainment waiting for you when you get back.
Universal Pictures must be really pleased with Justin Lin. He knows how to do these movies right. They have a real franchise on their hands. I can’t be more excited to watch the next film. They add another action star to the list. Don’t miss the scene before the end credits where they reveal who it is. (Also, if the Internet hasn’t spoiled it for you already)
This is definitely my guilty pleasure this season. If you’re a fan of these films, you don’t need to read this review to know whether you will like this film or not. You also don’t need to know whether this film is better than the fifth (it’s very close) but only if it is a good Fast and Furious movie and it totally is. More importantly, it is a competent and enjoyable actioner.
